“A little bit of history was made today at City Airport (Manchester Barton) as the team started the Airspace4All ‘GA Airfield ATS ADS-B Traffic Display Trial’ , which allows the AFISOs to make use of a display showing the position of ADSB-Out equipped aircraft in the vicinity of the airfield.

This is believed to be the first time in the UK that Aerodrome FISOs have been officially permitted to make use of this type of display and provides them with enhanced situational awareness on suitably equipped aircraft.

The aim of the trial is to gather evidence to enable the CAA to assess this capability and give consideration to policy change authorising use of ADS-B real-time traffic displays by GA ATS units. Additionally, it is hoped this trial will encourage further development of technology to support ATS provision at UK GA airfields.

Initially the FISOs at Manchester (Barton) have ‘soft launched’ the trial, with only aircraft that are already ADSB-Out equipped being displayed, however in March Uavionix SkyEcho devices will be loaned to selected operators providing a greater volume of aircraft to work with in order to support the trial’s aims.
